Victorian Staffordshire Figurine (Late 19th Century)

A rare and authentic window into Victorian spirituality and folk art, this “flatback” figurine depicts the biblical scene of Daniel in the Lions’ Den. Unlike later reproductions, this piece is a genuine late 19th-century original, as evidenced by the characteristic small vent hole on the base.

The composition is quintessentially Staffordshire: Daniel sits with a stoic, hand-painted expression, flanked by two lions that appear more like faithful companions than predators—a charming example of the “naive” style of the era. The creamy white glaze is covered in a beautiful, dense network of crazing, a soulful patina that only a century of history can create. With its unpainted back, it was designed to stand as a silent guardian on a Victorian mantelpiece. Today, it remains a powerful piece of “Everyday Poetry,” perfect for adding a touch of narrative depth to a modern library or a curated shelf.
