Antique French Academic Plaster Sculpture of a Classical Male Figure (Early 20th Century)

A captivating example of French academic artistry, embodying strength and classical grace. This striking plaster sculpture dates back to early 20th-century France. It depicts a powerfully built male figure in a dynamic, contrapposto pose, partially draped in heavily folded fabric. The piece exhibits the hallmarks of an “écorché” or academic study model (modèle d’atelier), used by art students and sculptors to master human anatomy, musculature, and the flow of classical drapery. The chalky, matte white finish of the plaster highlights the deep sculpting and dramatic interplay of light and shadow across the figure’s form. Standing at a substantial 48 cm, it makes an imposing and highly decorative statement piece, perfect for bringing a touch of Parisian studio elegance to a mantelpiece, a library, or a thoughtfully curated pedestal.
